Arts Events:
In-school performances, lecture demonstrations and classroom workshops. Dance presentation are integrated with music, art, language and social studies to suit curriculum studies and provide students and teachers with an in-depth education of Indian and its culture. Teacher information packs are provided prior to the event. Suitable for grades K-12.
Residency Programs:
Five days and longer. Ranjanaa Devi and the Nataraj Dancers are Roster Artists for NEST (Nefa and Massachusetts Cultural Council Touring roster) and present residencies for grades 2-8, within a 20-day minimum. Presenter can apply for funds to bring Nataraj Dancers to their schools.
Grades 2-4:
Animal Tales of India. Based on the well-known Pancha Tantra stories, this residency introduces elements of dramatic dance, animal representation, rhythmic footwork, hand gestures and mime, within a matrix of Indian music, literature and artwork. It is built into the school curriculum, introducing many aspects of an ancient third world culture, which complements language arts, social studies, arts and music. The residency includes an assembly program of the material studied in a dance theater style.
Grades 5-8:
Mela. This residency is developed around the Village Fair, showing the life and cultures of the people who live in villages of India. Colorful and full of fun, this project exposes the students to the simple pleasures and the yearly cycle of the agricultural community. Folk dances, folk arts and crafts and the sense of community are stressed through the learning process. This residency works well within the curriculum. The students learn dances, play folk instruments and act in short scenarios. The artwork involves floor paintings, mask-making and construction of toys and implements. Tailored to the older student, this project introduces Indian songs, languages, geography, and village customs in a relaxed and entertaining atmosphere, with plenty of opportunity for participation for the teacher and the student.
